Natural Cotton Color has fabrics coded for tracking

Natural Cotton Color pieces that are in the store in Paris, and in the showroom in Milan, have a traceability solution for checking the origin of the product. It is a binary code that can be seen on the fabric with ultraviolet light, from an app or software. “If the customer enters the code in the app, he will be able to access each step of the production of the piece, from the cotton harvest, the weaving and where it was made and check that the product is sustainable”, explains Micheline Maia Teixeira, co-founder of R-Inove .

The Brazilian startup R-Inove provides solutions through coding in textile threads. In this way, it guarantees the originality of the product with traceability from the field to the hanger.

It was the first time that R-Inove codified colored cotton. Natural Cotton Collor pioneered the traceability partnership with the startup. Micheline explains that R-Inove was looking for a brand that had sustainability at its core and found in the brand the necessary agility to test. “We had doubts whether the formulation used to code white cotton would also work for colored cotton. And it worked out great! We were able to validate that our technology also serves the cotton segment that already grows in color. We were happy to also serve this Brazilian cotton chain that makes a difference in the lives of many families through sustainable cultivation,” she said.

The CEO of Natural Cotton Color recalls that, in 2014, clothes and accessories began to be produced with dyed fabrics. And later resold in tourist spots in João Pessoa. All sold for less than half the price as if they were made with the original-colored cotton.

Cotton, which already grows naturally colored, is grown in Paraíba in the semi-arid region. Without irrigation and without dyeing, the production process saves 87.5% of water, compared to production in traditional industries. Natural Cotton Color works with a guaranteed purchase contract with family farmers, paying a fair price for certified organic cotton. Natural Cotton Color’s finished products are Friend of the Earth certified by the World Organization Sustainability (WSO).

Even though Natural Cotton Color products are Friend of the Earth certified for sustainability, participating as a ‘success case’ for R-Inove is yet another opportunity to guarantee the authenticity of the products to the customer.

International recognition in Davos

One of Natural Cotton Color’s pieces was presented at an international mission in Davos, Switzerland. The International Textile Manufactores Federation (ITFM) selected R- Inove for the ITMF Start-up Award 2022. With that, the co-founder participated in the “Start-up Sessions”, presenting the technological solution at the annual conference in Davos, Switzerland. “Only seven startups in the world were chosen. R-Inove was the only Brazilian startup among these seven selected in the world”, emphasized Micheline.

After the conference, R-Inove received an invitation from ITMF to apply for membership and, after voting by current members, it was accepted. “Today, we are an ITMF member free of charge for a period of 2 years. Being an ITMF member brings us a global knowledge of textiles, through publications, lectures and meetings on various subjects in this very important segment”, she clarifies.

Francisca congratulates the innovative idea and is grateful to have her products at an international conference. “Our colored cotton was among the main players in the textile sector. We believe that, in this way, it was also incorporated into the trends and innovations that must meet the needs of sustainable fashion. And this is really quite promising”, declared Francisca.

“R-Inove illustrated the potential of its traceability technology by providing a platform for the global textile industry where leaders can meet and exchange best practices is crucial in a rapidly changing world. As a member of the ITMF, startups like R-Inove have the opportunity to promote their innovation and develop a better understanding of international markets. At ITMF, we are convinced that R-Inove will benefit from this step”, said Dr. Christian Schindler, Director General of the ITMF.
